Choosing a Wedding DJ Scotland Couples Trust: Experience and Suitability

Does your DJ have the right experience for a wedding?

There are many different kinds of DJs, some with strong preferences for specific music types. A fantastic club DJ or kids’ party DJ isn’t necessarily the right choice for a wedding. A great wedding DJ will have extensive experience in the wedding sector specifically. They will be comfortable playing across genres, confident on the microphone for formal announcements and toasts, able to adapt to the crowd as the evening develops, and discreet enough never to become a distracting feature at any point during your day.

Are you hiring an individual DJ, an agency or a company?

There are many ways to hire a DJ. Agencies are often recommended but this isn’t always warranted. An agency will have various DJs on their books and will promise a replacement if your DJ is unavailable — but any reputable individual DJ will have the same backup arrangements in place. The difference is that an agency charges around 25% commission for this guarantee, then passes the responsibility back to the DJ anyway. Hiring a DJ directly, with a contract that specifies backup provisions, gives you the same protection without the additional cost.

Music, Equipment and Practicalities

What will your DJ provide?

It’s easy to book a DJ without fully understanding what they’re bringing. Clarify exactly what sound and lighting equipment is included, whether it’s suitable for your venue size, and whether there are any hidden costs. A good DJ should be able to tell you precisely what they’re providing and what, if anything, you’d need to arrange separately.

What music does your DJ have — and do they own it?

Most DJs own a large music collection. You still need to confirm they have what you want and that they’re genuinely comfortable playing it. If a DJ has no real experience with a particular genre you’ve requested, they should say so early and recommend someone who does.

One important point: streaming music at events has become more common, but it carries real risk. Streaming gives access to almost any track — until the wifi drops. Make sure your DJ owns their music rather than relying on a streaming service. Streaming can be useful for sourcing the odd unavailable track, but your entire evening’s music should never depend on a venue’s internet connection.

Can you submit a playlist in advance?

Some DJs won’t accept playlists, insisting you trust their judgement entirely. Never accept this — it will leave you with unhappy guests and music that wasn’t right for your crowd. A good DJ will ask for your preferences well in advance, confirm they have everything you want, and take requests on the night from you and your guests.

Will they accept a do-not-play list?

Just as important as the music you want is the music you don’t. There are many reasons couples have specific tracks they’d rather not hear on their wedding night. Make sure your DJ takes this seriously and notes it formally.

Does the price include lighting?

Music and atmosphere go hand in hand, but don’t underestimate the visual impact of good lighting. Ask specifically whether lighting is included in the quoted price, and if so what kind — basic disco lighting and quality uplighting are very different things.

Insurance, Safety and Contracts

Does your DJ have the correct insurance?

Your venue will have a contract with you, and your DJ will have a contract with you. If something goes wrong and the venue suffers damage, they will claim against you — and if your DJ has no Public Liability Insurance (PLI), you’ll be left to pay. PLI is an absolute requirement when choosing a wedding DJ Scotland-wide. Do not hire a DJ without it, no matter how convincing their pitch or how attractive their price. The National Association of DJs has a helpful guide to the kind of questions worth asking before you book.

Is the equipment PAT tested?

Properly tested and certified equipment reduces the risk of electrical faults and goes hand in hand with PLI. A responsible DJ will have up-to-date PAT certificates and should be able to provide them to any venue that asks. Many venues now require this before a DJ can set up.

Does your DJ have a backup plan for equipment failure?

Even well-maintained equipment can fail. If an amplifier or key piece of kit breaks down mid-event, does your DJ have a backup system to keep the evening going? Good maintenance and PAT certification reduce the risk, but a professional DJ will have contingency plans in place regardless. Ask specifically what happens if something goes wrong.

Does your DJ provide a written contract?

Always insist on a written contract. A verbal agreement is technically binding but without anything in writing you have no evidence of what was agreed — on music, timing, setup, pricing or any other detail. A professional DJ will provide a contract as a matter of course.

This wedding DJ French Consulate booking was our first time performing at the French Consulate in Edinburgh. The occasion was the wedding of Camille and Emmanuel and the party for all their guests.

We always like to perform at a venue we have never been to before so were keen to see what was ahead of us at the French Consulate. It is a pretty grand building with some great staff.

Hire an experienced Wedding DJ

Every wedding DJ French Consulate booking starts the same way: the first, and very important, thing to impress us was the lift. This place has a lift! Unlike next door, at the Signet Library, where it almost kills us every time. A nice, easy access in a decent time left us plenty of time to set up our smaller than normal rig into the limited space we had for the night.

The wedding breakfast and dinner were held in the Edinburgh Suite which looks like a conferencing room. By the time the room was all decorated, it looked great.

It was a long day from the set up at 5pm. Dinner at 730 and dancing from 1030 until 130.

Wedding DJ French Consulate: The Music

We have plenty of experience performing at weddings but it is not very often we have been asked to do a full French wedding. Although confident that this would be a successful and enjoyable night, we were a bit apprehensive due to the large number of French songs chosen for the reception.

To best DJ any event there is a need to know and understand the music selection before you. There is a need for the knowledge of how to put certain pieces of music together in the right way. To achieve this there is also a need to know the music pretty well.

Our knowledge of French music is pretty much as good as our French language, limited to a couple of words. So with the help of the bride and groom’s list, we did what we could on the night. We ROCKED it! Unexpectedly the result was exactly as desired by the happy couple.

Everyone attending was just brilliant. Even when trying ceilidh dancing there was great banter and giggles. It is so much harder explaining the dances to people with a limited understanding of English, or our brand of Scottish at least.

Great people, great fun and a very successful night all round.

Melville Castle in Midlothian was the stunning setting for the wedding reception of Lisa and Tim Blunn. Their guest list brought together family from Italy, friends from London, and a crowd who were absolutely ready to celebrate all night. Set just seven miles south of Edinburgh city centre on 54 acres of private estate, Melville Castle is one of Scotland’s most beautiful castle wedding venues. This October evening showed it at its best.

Setup began in the early afternoon, well ahead of the guests arriving. The marquee at Melville Castle is the ideal space for a wedding reception. The stage area to the far left gives the DJ a clear view of the room, while keeping the sound focused on the dancefloor rather than washing over the dining tables. Easy loading access and genuinely helpful staff made the setup straightforward.

The First Dance

Lisa and Tim chose John Legend’s All Of Me for their first dance — a perfect choice that draws the whole room in. As the couple took to the floor surrounded by their guests, it was immediately clear this was a close, warm group of people, ready to make the most of every minute. As a result, it set exactly the right tone for the rest of the evening.

The Wedding Shoe Game

Before the party proper got underway, the Wedding Shoe Game made an appearance — with a twist. Rather than the usual pre-set questions, the guests wrote the questions themselves. It started innocently enough, then quickly took a turn. Lisa and Tim played along brilliantly, getting some wonderful reactions from their families. In fact, it turned into a great ice-breaker for a room full of guests from different countries who were meeting each other for the first time.

An International Dancefloor

The music request from Lisa and Tim was genuinely eclectic — and wonderfully so. Because Lisa’s family had travelled from Italy, bringing their own musical tastes with them, the playlist ranged from Italian songs to Spanish, hip hop, R&B, dance and classic disco. It’s exactly the kind of variety that keeps a dancefloor interesting all evening. So the crowd delivered in kind, dancing from the first song to the last, with requests still coming in as the night wound down.

The marquee has a sound limiter in place — something worth knowing when planning your entertainment. Melville Castle’s limiter works by monitoring the overall sound level in the room. If the threshold is exceeded, it cuts the power to the DJ equipment momentarily. This is worth being aware of, not just because of the obvious interruption, but because of a specific feature of the marquee: there are speakers mounted above the dancefloor in the ceiling. Because of this, even at sensible volume levels, the cumulative effect of music plus a lively crowd directly underneath those speakers can occasionally trip the limiter. However, it doesn’t mean the evening is compromised. It simply means your DJ needs to be experienced with the room and manage levels proactively rather than reactively.

This Archerfield House wedding reception, held for Kirsten and Greg Lorenz in East Lothian, was one to remember. The couple flew over from New Orleans with 40 friends and family, absolutely ready to party. From the moment the first dance ended, the energy in the room was electric.

The First Dance

The evening opened with two first dances back to back. Ray LaMontagne’s You Are The Best Thing played for Kirsten and Greg. Lee Ann Womack’s I Hope You Dance followed, for the parents. Between them, both songs set exactly the right tone: warm, heartfelt, and with just enough energy to get the room moving.

Live Saxophone at Archerfield

Right after the first dances came something a little special. Saxophonist Ben Noir played two live sets, bringing tremendous energy and showmanship to the floor. Weaving a live musician into the evening alongside the DJ works brilliantly for a crowd ready to celebrate. This was a perfect example of it. In combination, the two kept the momentum high throughout the night.

The First Dance

Pauline and Derek cared deeply that their first dance would bring guests onto the floor straight away. They wanted something romantic with the right message, but with the energy to get everyone involved. Andy Williams’ Can’t Take My Eyes Off You was the perfect choice. It opened slow and intimate for the couple. Then it burst into life at exactly the right moment for guests to join in.
