Burns Night Daytime Disco Scotland

Burns Night falls on 25th January every year — right in the thick of the Scottish winter, when people are looking for a reason to get together and do something genuinely celebratory after the long stretch between Hogmanay and spring. A Burns Night daytime disco is exactly that: a proper Scottish afternoon party that celebrates the Bard, his music, and the culture he represents, with a full DJ set, a ceilidh element if you want it, and everyone home before the January night bites.

Premier Disco has been providing entertainment at Burns Suppers, ceilidhs and Scottish celebrations across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Central Scotland for over 40 years. We know the format, we know the music, and we know how to make a Scottish afternoon feel genuinely special rather than just a box-ticking exercise.

What Is a Burns Night Daytime Disco?

The traditional Burns Supper — haggis, neeps and tatties, the Selkirk Grace, the Immortal Memory, the Toast to the Lassies — is a wonderful thing, but it’s not always practical. It runs late, requires a full sit-down meal, and involves quite a lot of whisky. Not everyone wants that, and not every group or venue is set up to deliver it.

A Burns Night daytime disco takes the spirit of Burns — the celebration of Scottish culture, the great songs, the communal joy — and delivers it in a format that works for a much wider range of groups. Typically running from around 1pm to 6pm, it combines:

  • A Scottish-themed DJ set — from traditional Scottish anthems through to classic floor-fillers with a Scottish connection
  • Ceilidh dances if wanted — we can call dances ourselves or bring in a ceilidh band
  • Background Scottish music during arrival and refreshments
  • Optional MC duties — readings from Burns, the Immortal Memory, a Toast to the Lassies and Reply, all adapted to suit your group
  • A relaxed afternoon atmosphere that doesn’t require anyone to commit to a late night in January

The Music

A Burns Night set is a genuine pleasure to build. The pool of Scottish music — from the traditional to the modern — is rich enough to fill an afternoon without repeating yourself or reaching for filler. We draw from:

  • The Burns songs themselves — Ae Fond Kiss, A Man’s a Man for A’ That, My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose, Scots Wha Hae, Green Grow the Rashes. These work as both background and as singalong moments.
  • Classic Scottish anthems — Flower of Scotland, Caledonia (Dougie MacLean), Loch Lomond. The ones that genuinely move people.
  • Scottish pop and rock — Simple Minds, The Proclaimers, Travis, Frightened Rabbit, Biffy Clyro, Texas, Wet Wet Wet, Bay City Rollers, Runrig. Artists who are genuinely Scottish and genuinely beloved.
  • Ceilidh dance music — Strip the Willow, Dashing White Sergeant, Gay Gordons, Canadian Barn Dance and more if you want to get everyone moving.
  • Floor-fillers with a Scottish flavour — songs that work in any disco but feel right for a Scottish afternoon celebration.

We’ll discuss the balance with you before the event. Some groups want 80% ceilidh and 20% modern DJ. Others want the opposite. We build the afternoon around your preferences and your crowd.

Who Books a Burns Night Daytime Event?

  • Bowling clubs and golf clubs — the natural home of a Burns Night celebration in Scotland. We’ve played at bowling clubs across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife and know this audience well.
  • Community halls and village groups — a daytime Burns event is much easier to organise and attend than an evening one, particularly in rural areas or for older members.
  • Social clubs and WRI groups — Scotland’s network of women’s groups and social clubs has a long tradition of Burns Night events. A daytime format suits perfectly.
  • Care homes and sheltered housing — a Burns afternoon is one of the most meaningful events we do. The music connects deeply with older residents, the ceilidh element gets people moving, and the Scottish cultural identity is something that genuinely matters. We’re experienced at adapting volume and pacing for these settings.
  • Corporate Burns events — Edinburgh and Glasgow businesses hosting a January team event find Burns Night a natural peg. A daytime slot means people can attend without it eating into their evening.
  • Private parties — a Burns Night birthday party, a family gathering, a 25th January celebration for any reason — a private daytime event gives you full control over the music, the programme and the atmosphere.
  • School and university events — a Burns Day celebration during school hours or a Scottish culture afternoon has obvious educational value, and we can calibrate the content accordingly.

Add a Ceilidh Element

A Burns Night event without at least a couple of ceilidh dances feels like something’s missing. We can incorporate ceilidh calling directly into the DJ set — calling the Gay Gordons, the Dashing White Sergeant and Strip the Willow between DJ tracks — or we can bring in a live ceilidh band to run a dedicated session within the afternoon.

The combination of a ceilidh section and a DJ section works brilliantly for mixed groups. The dances get everyone on their feet regardless of whether they know what they’re doing (nobody does, really — that’s part of the joy), and the DJ set gives people a chance to catch their breath and dance in their own way.

Extend the Celebration: Beyond 25th January

Burns Night is on the 25th January, but there’s nothing stopping you celebrating it on the nearest Saturday, or any weekend in January or early February when it suits your group. We get enquiries for “Burns-themed” events throughout the first quarter of the year — a Scottish afternoon isn’t just for Burns Night itself.

Similarly, a Scottish-themed daytime disco works beautifully for St Andrew’s Day (30th November), Hogmanay, or simply as a standalone Scottish celebration at any time of year. If you want to celebrate being Scottish, you don’t need a reason beyond that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need to book specifically for 25th January?

Not at all. The nearest Saturday to Burns Night is always popular, and we run Scottish-themed daytime events throughout January and February. If the 25th works for your group, great — but the nearest weekend often suits better for community events. Get in touch as early as possible for January dates as they go quickly.

Can you call ceilidh dances as well as DJ?

Yes — James can call ceilidh dances over recorded ceilidh music as part of the DJ set, so you don’t necessarily need a separate band. For larger events or where live music is important, we can arrange a full ceilidh band as part of the package.

Can you incorporate Burns Night traditions into the event?

Yes. We can incorporate the Immortal Memory, the Toast to the Lassies and Reply, a reading of Tam o’ Shanter or Address to a Haggis into the programme. We’ll discuss how formal or informal you want these elements to be — from a full traditional Burns Supper format to just a brief acknowledgement of the occasion.

What areas of Scotland do you cover?

We’re based in Edinburgh and cover Burns Night events across Edinburgh and the Lothians, Fife, Glasgow and the Central Belt, Stirling, Perth and Perthshire, the Scottish Borders and beyond. Get in touch and we’ll confirm whether we can reach your venue.

How far in advance should we book?

January is a popular month — Burns Night dates in particular book up from September and October onwards. We’d strongly recommend getting in touch in autumn if you’re planning a January event. That said, always ask even at short notice — we sometimes have availability.
