What Actually Makes a Good Wedding DJ?

1 21st January 2024 by James Veal

We’ve been DJing weddings for a long time now — long enough to know there’s no such thing as a perfect wedding DJ in the abstract. There’s only the right DJ for your wedding. So what makes a good wedding DJ in practice? It’s worth talking about honestly, because a lot of what you’ll read online is marketing fluff. Here’s our take, from a team that’s done this hundreds of times.

What Makes a Good Wedding DJ: Experience Isn’t What You’d Think

Years of gigs matter, but what really counts is whether a DJ has done your type of event. A DJ who’s brilliant at nightclubs might be completely out of their depth at a wedding, where the crowd shifts from toddlers to 80-year-olds over the course of a night. Wedding DJ experience means knowing how to handle a dancefloor that’s half-empty at 8pm and absolutely rammed by 10pm, and not panicking about either. That’s a big part of what makes a good wedding DJ — someone who reads the room and adapts without missing a beat.

It means knowing that when the father of the bride asks for something you’ve never heard of, you either have it or you know how to handle the moment without making him feel embarrassed. That kind of thing only comes from doing it.

Planning Makes the Night — Not the Night Itself

The best wedding receptions we’ve done weren’t the result of inspired in-the-moment decisions. They were planned well. We use an online wedding planner with every couple so we’ve worked through the running order, the first dance, the must-plays and the absolutely-nots before we ever load a van. By the time we arrive at the venue, we already know the couple, the songs, and what matters to them.

The improvisation happens within that framework — reading which direction the room is going, spotting when to shift tempo, knowing when to take a guest’s request and when to smile and quietly park it for later. But none of that works without the groundwork.

Equipment Matters, But It’s Not the Point

We use good kit — professional-grade speakers, proper lighting, backups for everything. But couples who get too focused on equipment specs are asking the wrong question. You’re not hiring a sound system — you’re hiring a team. The best setup in the world sounds terrible if the DJ doesn’t know how to use it, and a competent DJ can make modest equipment sound great.

What you should care about is whether the DJ has a second copy of everything critical. The night we’d hate to have is the one where something fails with no fallback in place. That’s never happened to us, and we intend to keep it that way.

The MC Role is Underrated

Half of what we do at a wedding has nothing to do with music. We’re coordinating with the venue, making sure the photographer knows the first dance is two minutes away, keeping an eye on whether the speeches have run over and the timeline needs adjusting. When we get on the microphone to welcome guests onto the dancefloor, the tone of that matters — too loud and shouty and people cringe, too quiet and nobody hears it.

A good DJ who can’t MC is only doing half the job at a wedding. It’s worth asking specifically about this when you’re speaking to potential DJs — MC skills are as much a part of what makes a good wedding DJ as musical taste.

How to Find the Right One

What makes a good wedding DJ — being ready on the microphone for speeches, not just playing music

Talk to them. Not just by email — actually speak. You’ll know within five minutes whether this is someone you trust to be the voice of your reception. Ask how they handle requests on the night, find out what happens if they’re ill, and check whether they’ve played your venue before. The answers matter less than how they answer.

If you’d like to have that conversation with us, get in touch. Or if you’d like to know more about how we work a wedding reception, the wedding reception page covers it in detail. The National Association of DJs has a useful guide too, if you want an independent view on what makes a good wedding DJ before you decide.

Fettes College Party 25/11/23

1 26th November 2023 by James Veal

What a Night!

DJ at Fettes College — Premier Disco lighting up the Macleod Centre for a 200-guest school party

200 Enthusiastic Kids

As DJ at Fettes College, we brought Premier Disco into the Macleod Centre — an old converted swimming pool. It was a night the school won’t forget. Step inside, and you’re instantly immersed in the pulsating energy of over 200 enthusiastic youngsters. The anticipation is palpable as they gear up for a night of unrestrained revelry. But what musical journey will this teenage party take? Will it be a TikTok/Rap affair, a quirky rock scene, or an outright wild celebration?

As the festivities kick off, the air is charged with enthusiasm. The teenagers waste no time, diving headfirst into the revelry, singing and bouncing along to the beats. Requests for their favourite tunes echo through the Macleod Centre. Because the crowd’s tastes are so diverse, every request creates a genuinely dynamic playlist.

DJ at Fettes College: The Macleod Centre

The setting, an old swimming pool given new life, adds a unique charm to the atmosphere. As DJ at Fettes College, we watched the echoes of laughter and the rhythmic thump of the music. Together, they transformed the space into a lively haven for the young partygoers. Throughout the night, the Macleod Centre pulses with an electric vibe that keeps everyone on their feet.

And then, the last note of the final song reverberates through the air. The room erupts in a rapturous round of applause. It’s a testament to a night filled with infectious energy and pure enjoyment. The eclectic mix of music, the vibrant crowd, and the unique venue all played their part. Together, they created an unforgettable experience.

Lively As!

In the heart of Fettes, this party captured real youthful exuberance. As DJ at Fettes College, that’s exactly the energy we love being part of. From R&B to electric dance, the music choices reflected the diverse tastes of the attendees. The Macleod Centre, with its history as a swimming pool, provided a backdrop that enhanced the overall atmosphere.

Whether you’re a teenager relishing the moment, or reminiscing about energetic nights gone by, this celebration had it all. It encapsulated the essence of a lively, music-filled gathering. It was a night where every beat, bounce, and cheer contributed to the creation of unforgettable memories.

19/08/23 Race Night Dalgety Bay Bowling Club

1 21st August 2023 by James Veal

Graham Connor at Premier Disco’s race night at Dalgety Bay Bowling Club

Race Night at Dalgety Bay: Duloch Juniors FC 2014

We were delighted to host this race night at Dalgety Bay Bowling Club on 19 August 2023, in support of Duloch Juniors FC 2014. We set up the event to raise money for the team’s new kit and to help cover travel costs for away games.

Graham Connor, who we liaised with throughout, was great to deal with. He gave us all the information we needed in plenty of time to get ready for the event.

Digital Tote Ticketing

Using the race card Graham gave us, we created custom race visuals for the night. These let us display all the race details on the big screen for everyone to see, and made running the betting table straightforward. The volunteers selling betting tickets found the system easy to use, which kept ticket sales and payouts running smoothly. In addition, much of the setup ran automatically behind the scenes, which saved us time and reduced the risk of mistakes.

Race Night at Dalgety Bay: The Venue

We arrived at the venue in good time — about 10 minutes before the staff opened up. Dalgety Bay Bowling Club isn’t huge, but it has a modern feel, and the staff kept everything well organised. Around 40 people came along, which was just right for a fun race night and disco combo.

For bookings and information about the venue, visit the Dalgety Bay Bowling Club website.

All the races went off without a hitch, so we raised a good amount of money for the club. Around the middle of the night, we tucked into a buffet — always a welcome treat.

Once the races finished, we packed up the race night gear. But the fun wasn’t over — we ran a really entertaining raffle with lots of great prizes, and the person leading it had a lively way with words that everyone enjoyed.

This race night at Dalgety Bay was a big success, and it gave the boys’ team a real boost with much-needed funds.

“The whole process from booking through to the night itself was so easy. James was always on hand to answer questions and provide advice. The electronic betting system is a game changer, absolutely brilliant!”

Why Choose Premier Disco for Your Wedding?

1 11th March 2023 by James Veal

Why choose Premier Disco for your wedding, when there are so many DJ listings online that all say roughly the same thing? Professional service. Extensive music library. Competitive pricing. It all starts to blur together, and it’s genuinely difficult to know what you’re actually getting until the night itself — which isn’t when you want to find out.

So rather than giving you another list of bullet points, here’s what we think actually sets Premier Disco apart, as honestly as we can put it.

Why Choose Premier Disco: One Team You Can Trust, Start to Finish

Why choose Premier Disco — James Veal behind the decks at a live wedding event

When you book Premier Disco, you’re booking a small, dedicated team led by James. In almost every case, James is the one you’ll speak to during planning and the one who shows up at your venue on the day. On the rare occasion he isn’t available, one of our experienced partner DJs steps in instead — always agreed with you in advance, never a surprise on the night. There’s no faceless agency in the middle passing your booking around.

That matters more than it might seem. You’re trusting someone with the atmosphere of your wedding day. That trust needs to be in a person you’ve actually spoken to, not just a company name.

We’ve Done This a Lot

We’ve been playing weddings for many years, across venues all over Edinburgh and the Lothians. Archerfield House, Melville Castle, the French Consulate in Edinburgh, hotel ballrooms, marquees on private estates. We know how different rooms behave acoustically, which venues have tricky loading access, and where the sound limiters are set low enough to cause problems if you’re not careful.

That kind of familiarity doesn’t show up on a price list, but it’s the difference between a smooth night and a stressful one.

The Planning Is Built In

Every booking includes access to an online planning system where we work through your running order and music together. First dance, father-daughter dance, must-plays, do-not-plays. You can invite guests to submit requests before the night, which gives us a picture of your crowd before we’ve even arrived.

Nothing about your evening should be a surprise on the day.

We’re Also Your MC

DJing a wedding isn’t just about the music. Your DJ will coordinate with your venue team, keep an eye on the timeline, and make all the announcements — first dance, cake cutting, last orders on the dancefloor. Done well, guests barely notice this is happening. Done badly, it makes an evening feel disjointed and rushed.

We’ve been doing this long enough to know the difference between a microphone moment that lands and one that falls flat. Getting it right is something we take seriously.

If Something Goes Wrong, We Have a Backup

Equipment fails. It’s rare, but it happens. We carry duplicate systems for everything critical, so a single hardware problem doesn’t end your evening. This is basic professionalism, but it’s worth confirming with any DJ you’re considering — you’d be surprised how many don’t bother. We’re also proud Mobile DJ Network members, which means our public liability insurance and professional standards are independently checked, not just self-declared.

Fully insured, PAT-tested, and we bring all the venue paperwork without being asked.

Let’s Talk

If this is starting to answer why choose Premier Disco for your wedding, the best next step is a conversation. Tell us your date, venue, and what you’re imagining for the evening — we’ll tell you honestly what we can do and whether we’re the right fit. Get in touch here, or take a look at the wedding reception package for more detail.

Corporate Karaoke in Scotland: Why It Works and What to Expect

1 11th December 2022 by a2

Karaoke and a room full of strangers sounds like a recipe for awkwardness. What actually happened at the Radisson Red in Glasgow was the opposite — and it’s a good example of why karaoke works so well as corporate entertainment when it’s run properly. It’s the same story we see again and again at corporate karaoke events across Scotland.

Corporate karaoke Scotland in action — the Radisson Red, Glasgow

The Event: An International Conference Finale in Glasgow

Jane from Hotdocs.ca brought together a group of delegates from across the world for a conference in Glasgow in November 2022. After days of sessions, site visits and networking, she wanted the final evening to be relaxed, fun and genuinely memorable — something that would bring people together regardless of where they’d come from.

She chose karaoke at the Radisson Red, and asked Premier Disco to host it. It’s become one of our favourite examples of corporate karaoke Scotland done right.

Why Karaoke Works for Corporate Groups

Corporate events often struggle with the same problem: how do you get a group of colleagues or delegates — many of whom don’t know each other well — to actually relax and enjoy themselves? Icebreaker activities can feel forced. A sit-down dinner ends too quietly. A DJ night leaves half the room on the sidelines.

Karaoke solves this in a way that’s hard to replicate. It gives people something to do together, something to laugh about, and a shared experience that doesn’t require everyone to be on the dance floor. One person gets up and sings — badly, brilliantly, or somewhere in between — and suddenly the whole room joins in. It breaks hierarchies, levels the playing field, and creates the kind of memories that people talk about long after the conference ends. It’s the same kind of shared, informal experience that CIPD’s research on employee engagement links to a more engaged team.

It also travels well. With delegates from multiple countries, karaoke has an almost universal appeal. The song catalogue spans decades and genres, so there’s something for everyone regardless of background or age. That’s exactly why corporate karaoke Scotland bookings work so well for international teams.

What You Get on the Night

Every corporate karaoke Scotland booking includes the same essentials: professional equipment, a huge song library spanning every genre and era, and a host who knows how to read a room. That last part matters more than the equipment. Getting the first few people up, keeping energy high, calling songs at the right pace, and knowing when to push and when to hold back — that’s what separates a great karaoke night from a flat one.

We work in venues across Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fife, Perth, Stirling and the rest of Central Scotland. Our corporate clients include conference dinners, team nights out, away days and end-of-year parties. Every event is different, and we adapt to the group. Some want a competitive singalong between teams; others prefer a relaxed evening where people dip in and out as they like.

Ready to Book Your Next Event?

If you’re looking for entertainment that actually brings a group together — rather than just filling a room — karaoke is worth serious consideration. It works for small teams of 20 and large conference groups of 150+, and it scales well to most venue setups. This is corporate karaoke Scotland done properly.

We also provide quiz nights, giant games (garden games), race nights and full DJ services for corporate functions. If you’d like to talk through what would work best for your event, get in touch — we’re happy to advise.

Corporate Karaoke FAQs

Does corporate karaoke really work for team building?

Yes — and it works better than most corporate team building formats. It’s participatory rather than passive, and it creates shared memories. It also gets colleagues laughing together in a way that a quiz or workshop rarely does. The key is having an experienced presenter who reads the room and encourages without pressuring anyone.

How many people can corporate karaoke cater for?

We provide corporate karaoke for groups from around 20 up to several hundred guests. For larger events we can run multiple microphones and manage longer queues to ensure the evening keeps moving.

Which areas of Scotland do you cover for corporate karaoke?

We cover corporate karaoke events across Scotland from our base near Edinburgh. Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, Dundee, Fife, Stirling, and the Scottish Borders are all within our regular coverage area.

Can karaoke be combined with other entertainment at a corporate event?

Absolutely — karaoke works brilliantly alongside a DJ set, a race night, or a quiz. A popular structure starts with a DJ set to open the evening, followed by karaoke as a mid-evening highlight. Then it’s back to the DJ for the rest of the night. We can build whatever format works best for your event.

100 Greatest Disco Hits Of All Time

1 3rd August 2021 by James Veal

Want these played live at your party? I’ve been DJing disco and soul at events across Scotland since 1979. See our decades & daytime disco parties, or get a free quote.

The Very Best Disco And Soul

A mirror ball for our greatest disco hits playlist — Premier Disco

The Best Disco Song In Our Greatest Disco Hits Playlist

Ever since the UK Top 40 started way back in 1952, thousands of songs have vied for a spot on the ultimate greatest disco hits playlist. As musical styles change through the decades, this list changes but not as much as you would think.

Hits from the earlier decades that stand the test of time will always outrank newer songs, as you can see in the list below. There are some cracking tunes here, and we encourage you to have a listen via your choice of music streaming service and see what you think.

This list might be of use when building the soundtrack to your event. It leans heavily on 70’s disco hits and soul classics — that was the golden era of classic disco, after all.

James remembers hunting high and low for a copy of the No. 1 song on this list. He heard it on the radio and just had to get a copy, eventually finding the 12″ version in a small record shop near the top of Easter Road in Edinburgh. Those are the kind of memories these soul classics still bring back.

If there’s anything you’d like to add to this list, just let us know.

ENJOY!
