Charity Fun Night Scotland — The Complete Guide to Raising More with Races, Quiz and Games

1 11th May 2026 by James Veal

This charity fun night guide is for any club, school or community group whose regular fundraiser has started to feel stale. If your group has run the same fundraiser a few years in a row, you’ll already know the problem. The first race night feels like an event. By the third or fourth, it’s a habit — and the takings show it. A charity fun night in Scotland is the answer to that. It gives your regular supporters something genuinely new while keeping everything that works about a race night: the excitement, the competitive edge, the straightforward format. On top of that, it adds a smartphone quiz and live games, which means more variety, more engagement and more money raised.

James at Premier Disco has been running charity fun nights across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife for years. Here’s an honest guide to how they work, what they raise and what makes them different.

Charity Fun Night Guide: What Is a Charity Fun Night?

Guests enjoying a real Premier Disco charity fun night guide event at Macmerry Bowling Club

A charity fun night is a combined fundraising event that packs three different formats into one evening. Rather than running a single activity from start to finish, the night moves through a series of activities that keep energy high and give different guests their moment to shine. At Premier Disco, the standard format includes:

  • 4 horse races — pre-recorded races on a large screen, with betting using our electronic tote system. The same format that has helped clients raise over £3,300 in a single evening at a standard race night.
  • 3 rounds of SpeedQuiz — a smartphone-based quiz where every guest plays on their own phone in real time. Live leaderboards display on screen after every round, which creates genuine competition across the whole room.
  • Live games — your choice from Spin the Wheel, Play Your Cards Right, Chase the Ace, Open the Box, Lucky Ball Grab, Music Bingo and more.
  • Professional DJ — music throughout to fill the gaps and close the night properly.

Everything runs with James hosting throughout, keeping the pace up, building the atmosphere and making sure every activity flows into the next. For full details, see the Charity Fun Night page.

How Much Can a Charity Fun Night Raise?

In short, it raises at least as much as a race night — and usually more. The reason is simple: more activities mean more ways to take money across the evening. In addition to race betting, you have quiz entry fees, game participation fees and the energy that builds when guests are genuinely competing with each other.

A well-prepared charity fun night with 100 guests typically raises £1,000–£2,500+. However, preparation is the key variable. James sends every client a Race Pack before the night — a practical guide to selling race sponsorships and horse ownerships in advance. Cara at Tranent FC used it to raise over £1,000 before the event even started. The night itself then builds on top of that.

How Does That Compare to a Standard Race Night?

A good race night raises £1,000–£2,000 with 100 guests. A charity fun night targets the same range — but because guests who aren’t particularly interested in racing are more engaged during the quiz and games sections, they tend to spend more across the whole evening. Furthermore, the variety keeps people at their tables for longer rather than heading to the bar between races.

Who Is a Charity Fun Night Best Suited For?

There are two situations where a charity fun night works especially well.

Groups who’ve done a race night before. If your regular crowd has already been to two or three race nights with you, a charity fun night gives them a reason to come back and spend again. The format is familiar enough to feel safe, but different enough to feel like a new event. Many of James’s clients book a charity fun night as their second or third fundraising event after a successful race night.

First-time organisers who want to offer more variety from the start. If you’re planning your first fundraising evening, a charity fun night gives you a richer programme that suits a wider range of guests. Consequently, people who aren’t racing fans still have a great night — and that shows in the takings.

The SpeedQuiz Element — Why It Works So Well

The smartphone quiz is genuinely different from a traditional pub quiz. There are no answer sheets, no marking, no waiting. Every guest plays on their own phone, answers appear in real time and the leaderboard updates after each round. As a result, the competition is visible to everyone in the room — and it tends to get personal quickly, especially at tables of friends or colleagues who know each other well.

It also works for all ages, which is important at a community fundraiser where your crowd spans several generations. Older guests who might be slightly uncertain about the race betting format often come alive during the quiz. In fact, James ran a charity fun night for a Myeloma UK fundraiser where the organiser afterwards described it as a perfect night — the quiz and the Irish Bingo in particular were highlights for the whole room.

Practical Tips for a Successful Charity Fun Night in Scotland

The same principles that apply to a race night apply here — preparation before the event makes a much bigger difference than anything that happens on the night itself. Here are the things that consistently make the biggest impact:

  1. Sell race sponsorships and horse ownerships early. James’s Race Pack explains exactly how to do this. The target is to cover the hire fee entirely from pre-event sales, so that everything raised on the night is pure profit for your cause.
  2. Promote the quiz element in advance. People who wouldn’t normally come to a race night will turn out for a quiz. Lead with the variety in your ticket promotion — “races, quiz and games” draws a wider crowd than “race night” alone.

More Charity Fun Night Guide Tips

  1. Choose your games to suit your crowd. James will discuss the options with you in advance. Music Bingo works brilliantly for mixed-age groups. Play Your Cards Right creates huge tension at the right moment. The right game for your crowd can make a section of the evening memorable in a way that a race alone can’t.
  2. Run a raffle alongside. A raffle fits naturally into the gaps between activities and adds another income stream with minimal extra work. Local businesses are often willing to donate prizes when you explain the cause.
  3. Book at least 6–8 weeks ahead. This gives you enough time to sell tickets, find race sponsors and get local press or social media coverage before the night. Autumn and pre-Christmas dates book up fast — so the earlier you get in touch, the better.

What Organisers Say

The Myeloma UK organiser who booked James for a charity fun night wrote afterwards:

“James Veal was the ultimate professional, set up in plenty of time for the event starting. He ran my Irish Bingo as well as the quiz, which everyone enjoyed. He is very good with his one liners and banter with the players — a great night was enjoyed by all. I can’t recommend James any better than perfect — 5 out of 5!”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a charity fun night combining races, quiz and games?

A charity fun night is a multi-format fundraising event that combines horse racing (with fictional betting and professional commentary), a quiz with competitive table rounds, and games such as music video bingo into a single entertaining evening. The variety keeps guests engaged throughout and creates more fundraising opportunities than any single event format on its own.

How much can you raise with a combined charity fun night in Scotland?

Combined charity fun nights in Scotland regularly raise between £1,500 and £3,000 or more in one evening. The key variables are ticket sales, race sponsorship from local businesses, and how many rounds and games are included. Premier Disco can help you plan a format designed to maximise what your specific audience will spend.

What does Premier Disco provide for a charity fun night?

Everything. Race video software and professional commentary, quiz rounds tailored to your audience, music video bingo cards and hosting, a full PA system, wireless microphone, and experienced MC hosting throughout the entire evening. Your team handles ticket sales and sponsorship — we handle the entertainment.

How long does a charity fun night last?

A typical charity fun night runs for three to four hours and feels fast-paced throughout. A common format is six races with quiz rounds in between, followed by music video bingo and a prize draw to close. The variety of formats prevents any single element from feeling drawn out.

Can I customise the format to suit my club or charity?

Yes. We work with you before the event to agree the running order, the number of rounds and how each element fits your timings and venue. If you have specific requirements — a charity auction, a raffle, a specific quiz theme — we build these into the plan.

How to Plan a Charity Fun Night in Scotland — A Step by Step Guide

1 11th May 2026 by James Veal

Looking for charity fun night ideas that actually raise money in Scotland? If so, you’re looking at one of the most flexible and entertaining fundraising formats available — because it consistently raises more than a single-activity event. A Premier Disco Charity Fun Night combines horse racing, a live smartphone quiz, interactive games and a DJ into one evening, so guests have reasons to stay engaged from the moment they arrive to the last song of the night.

What Makes a Charity Fun Night Different from a Race Night?

A standard race night is a brilliant fundraiser — we run dozens of them every year and they consistently raise £1,000–£3,000+ for clubs and charities across Scotland. However, if your group runs a race night annually, you’ll eventually notice that the same guests stop spending as much. They know the format, they’ve been before, and the novelty has worn off.

A Charity Fun Night solves this problem. Instead of one format running all evening, guests get a mix of activities. As a result, there are no flat moments — when the races are on, racing fans are leaning in. When the quiz starts, the people who aren’t bothered about horses suddenly get competitive. When the games begin, the tables that haven’t won anything yet get another shot. In short, everyone stays in the room and everyone keeps spending.

What Happens at a Charity Fun Night in Scotland?

A typical evening runs something like this:

  1. Guests arrive and horses are sold — the first race is set up while people settle in
  2. Races 1 and 2 — betting, commentary and prize payouts using our electronic tote system
  3. SpeedQuiz rounds 1 and 2 — every guest plays on their own smartphone, live leaderboards on screen
  4. Races 3 and 4 — energy builds as the auction race approaches
  5. Live games — Spin the Wheel, Play Your Cards Right, Chase the Ace or whatever suits your crowd
  6. SpeedQuiz final round and winners announced
  7. DJ closes the night — guests who want to dance stay on, everyone else leaves happy

However, the exact order and mix of activities is flexible — we’ll plan it with you in advance based on your venue, your crowd and what you want to achieve on the night.

How Much Can a Charity Fun Night Fundraiser Raise?

With multiple activities comes multiple ways to raise money. Here’s how the income streams stack up across a typical Charity Fun Night:

  • Ticket sales — entry fee with an initial stake included
  • Race sponsorship and horse ownership — sold in advance using our Race Pack
  • On-the-night race betting — per-race stakes throughout the evening
  • Quiz entry — small per-head charge or included in the ticket price
  • Game participation — spin the wheel, cards, cash grab games
  • Raffle and bar — additional income running throughout

In practice, a well-run Charity Fun Night with 100 guests typically raises £1,000–£2,500+. Furthermore, because guests stay more engaged all evening, the per-person spend tends to be higher than at a single-format event.

The SpeedQuiz — Why Guests Love It

The SpeedQuiz is one of the elements that gets talked about most after the night. Every guest plays on their own smartphone — no answer sheets, no team captains collecting papers, no waiting. Questions appear on the big screen and on each phone simultaneously. After each round, the live leaderboard goes up on screen and suddenly everyone at every table is comparing scores.

It works for all ages. In fact, the over-60s are often the most competitive players in the room. The phone-based format requires no technical knowledge — if you can send a text, you can play.

Charity Fun Night Ideas to Boost Takings

Beyond the core programme, there are several easy ways to raise more on the night. For example:

  1. Sell quiz team names to sponsors — a named team on the leaderboard is a fun, low-cost sponsorship option for local businesses
  2. Add a heads and tails game — simple, fast, and everyone participates. A £2 entry pot builds quickly in a 100-person room
  3. Run a prize raffle between activities — ask local businesses to donate prizes in exchange for a mention on the night
  4. Theme the evening — a fancy dress theme boosts ticket sales and gets people posting on social media in advance
  5. Add giant/garden games or Banging Bingo as a warm-up — great for getting guests talking before the main programme starts

Who Runs Charity Fun Nights in Scotland?

We work with football clubs, rugby clubs, bowling clubs, school parent councils, church groups, hospice fundraising committees and community organisations across Edinburgh, the Lothians and Fife. In addition, the Charity Fun Night format works well for corporate fundraising evenings where a standard race night might feel too one-dimensional for a mixed professional audience.

If you’re not sure whether a Charity Fun Night or a straight race night is the better fit, get in touch and we’ll help you decide based on your group, your venue and your goals. For more charity fun night ideas tailored to your event, just ask — we plan the mix around what will work best for your crowd.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a charity fun night fundraiser in Scotland?

A Charity Fun Night is a combined fundraising event that runs several activities in one evening — horse races, a smartphone quiz, live games and a DJ. It gives guests more variety than a standard race night and, as a result, keeps them engaged and spending throughout the whole event.

How far in advance should I book?

We recommend at least 6–8 weeks to give you time to promote the event and sell tickets and sponsorships. Autumn and pre-Christmas dates go quickly, so earlier is always better.

Do guests need smartphones for the SpeedQuiz?

Yes — the quiz runs through each guest’s own smartphone. In practice, this isn’t an issue at most events. However, if some guests don’t have a smartphone, they can simply share with a neighbour or skip the quiz and join back in for the races and games.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a charity fun night different from a standard race night?

A charity fun night combines multiple entertainment formats — typically horse racing, music video bingo and a quiz — into a single evening. This variety keeps guests engaged for longer, creates more betting and game opportunities, and consistently raises more money than a single-format race night alone.

How do you run a charity fun night in Scotland?

Premier Disco handles everything — race video software, quiz rounds, music video bingo cards, a professional PA system, MC hosting throughout and all the logistics. Your committee’s job is to sell tickets, arrange sponsorship for races and ensure a good turnout. We do the rest.

How much can a charity fun night raise in Scotland?

Well-organised charity fun nights in Scotland regularly raise £1,500 to £3,000 in a single evening depending on ticket numbers, race sponsorship and on-the-night game participation. The multi-format approach creates more revenue opportunities than a single event type.

What size of venue do I need for a charity fun night?

Generally, any venue with enough space for tables, a screen and a small stage or DJ area works well. Village halls, bowling clubs, sports club function rooms and hotel function suites are all popular choices across Scotland. We are experienced at adapting to all sizes and layouts.

How far in advance should I book?

For popular dates and larger events, booking two to three months in advance is advisable. For smaller community events, four to six weeks is usually sufficient. Contact us as early as possible to check availability and begin planning the format that will work best for your group.

What to Expect When You Book Premier Disco for Your Wedding Reception

1 26th January 2025 by James Veal

When couples get in touch with us about a wedding reception DJ Scotland couples can trust, they usually know roughly what they want — good music, a full dancefloor, someone who’ll handle the evening so they don’t have to. What they’re less sure about is what that actually looks like in practice, and what separates a DJ who delivers it from one who doesn’t.

This is our honest answer, from the inside.

Wedding Reception DJ Scotland: The Evening Isn’t Just About Music

Wedding reception DJ Scotland — packed dancefloor at a Premier Disco evening reception

By the time the evening reception starts, your guests have been at a wedding all day. Energy levels vary: some are well-fed and relaxed, others have had a few drinks and are ready to go, and a few are tired and will leave by 9pm. A DJ who just plays music to a room doesn’t account for any of that — the good ones read those dynamics constantly and adjust accordingly.

We’ll typically start the evening with something accessible — well-known songs that get people comfortable on the floor without it feeling like a nightclub yet. Then, as the night builds and the room shifts, the music shifts with it. That’s not a formula you can write down; it’s something you develop from doing it a lot.

The Ceremony and Wedding Breakfast

A lot of couples don’t realise we can be there from the very start of the day, not just the evening. Covering the ceremony means handling the processional, the signing of the register, and the recessional — all timed carefully and played live, not pre-programmed. During the wedding breakfast we act as MC for the speeches and keep background music running at a level that actually lets people talk.

Having the same team handle all of this means one consistent voice throughout the day, and one less supplier for you to brief and coordinate. The all-day wedding package covers everything if that’s the route you want to take.

The Planning Part

Every couple we work with gets access to an online planning portal where we build out the running order and music together before the day. You can submit your first dance choice, the songs you definitely want played, and just as importantly, anything you really don’t want played. (You’d be surprised how often that list saves an awkward moment.)

Guests can also submit requests through the same system in the run-up to the wedding, which gives us a feel for the crowd before we’ve even set foot in the venue.

What We Actually Bring

This is what you get from a wedding reception DJ Scotland couples can rely on: a full PA system sized to the room, disco lighting, uplighting if you want it, a microphone for speeches and announcements, and everything backed up with a second copy. We’re PAT-tested and public liability insured, and we handle all the paperwork venues ask for without chasing.

We’ve played at venues across Edinburgh, the Lothians, and beyond — castle ballrooms, hotel function suites, marquees, outdoor spaces. Each one handles sound differently, and we’ve learned most of them the hard way. That venue familiarity is worth more than it sounds on a night when the sound limiter cuts in unexpectedly or the load-in is more complicated than the venue described.

Getting in Touch

If you’re at the stage where you’re thinking seriously about a wedding reception DJ Scotland couples can trust, the best thing is to have a conversation. Tell us your date, your venue, and what kind of night you’re imagining — we’ll tell you honestly whether we’re the right fit and what we can do for you.

Get in touch here, or take a look at the wedding reception page for more detail on the full package.

Fettes College Party 25/11/23

1 26th November 2023 by James Veal

What a Night!

DJ at Fettes College — Premier Disco lighting up the Macleod Centre for a 200-guest school party

200 Enthusiastic Kids

As DJ at Fettes College, we brought Premier Disco into the Macleod Centre — an old converted swimming pool. It was a night the school won’t forget. Step inside, and you’re instantly immersed in the pulsating energy of over 200 enthusiastic youngsters. The anticipation is palpable as they gear up for a night of unrestrained revelry. But what musical journey will this teenage party take? Will it be a TikTok/Rap affair, a quirky rock scene, or an outright wild celebration?

As the festivities kick off, the air is charged with enthusiasm. The teenagers waste no time, diving headfirst into the revelry, singing and bouncing along to the beats. Requests for their favourite tunes echo through the Macleod Centre. Because the crowd’s tastes are so diverse, every request creates a genuinely dynamic playlist.

DJ at Fettes College: The Macleod Centre

The setting, an old swimming pool given new life, adds a unique charm to the atmosphere. As DJ at Fettes College, we watched the echoes of laughter and the rhythmic thump of the music. Together, they transformed the space into a lively haven for the young partygoers. Throughout the night, the Macleod Centre pulses with an electric vibe that keeps everyone on their feet.

And then, the last note of the final song reverberates through the air. The room erupts in a rapturous round of applause. It’s a testament to a night filled with infectious energy and pure enjoyment. The eclectic mix of music, the vibrant crowd, and the unique venue all played their part. Together, they created an unforgettable experience.

Lively As!

In the heart of Fettes, this party captured real youthful exuberance. As DJ at Fettes College, that’s exactly the energy we love being part of. From R&B to electric dance, the music choices reflected the diverse tastes of the attendees. The Macleod Centre, with its history as a swimming pool, provided a backdrop that enhanced the overall atmosphere.

Whether you’re a teenager relishing the moment, or reminiscing about energetic nights gone by, this celebration had it all. It encapsulated the essence of a lively, music-filled gathering. It was a night where every beat, bounce, and cheer contributed to the creation of unforgettable memories.

19/08/23 Race Night Dalgety Bay Bowling Club

1 21st August 2023 by James Veal

Graham Connor at Premier Disco’s race night at Dalgety Bay Bowling Club

Race Night at Dalgety Bay: Duloch Juniors FC 2014

We were delighted to host this race night at Dalgety Bay Bowling Club on 19 August 2023, in support of Duloch Juniors FC 2014. We set up the event to raise money for the team’s new kit and to help cover travel costs for away games.

Graham Connor, who we liaised with throughout, was great to deal with. He gave us all the information we needed in plenty of time to get ready for the event.

Digital Tote Ticketing

Using the race card Graham gave us, we created custom race visuals for the night. These let us display all the race details on the big screen for everyone to see, and made running the betting table straightforward. The volunteers selling betting tickets found the system easy to use, which kept ticket sales and payouts running smoothly. In addition, much of the setup ran automatically behind the scenes, which saved us time and reduced the risk of mistakes.

Race Night at Dalgety Bay: The Venue

We arrived at the venue in good time — about 10 minutes before the staff opened up. Dalgety Bay Bowling Club isn’t huge, but it has a modern feel, and the staff kept everything well organised. Around 40 people came along, which was just right for a fun race night and disco combo.

For bookings and information about the venue, visit the Dalgety Bay Bowling Club website.

All the races went off without a hitch, so we raised a good amount of money for the club. Around the middle of the night, we tucked into a buffet — always a welcome treat.

Once the races finished, we packed up the race night gear. But the fun wasn’t over — we ran a really entertaining raffle with lots of great prizes, and the person leading it had a lively way with words that everyone enjoyed.

This race night at Dalgety Bay was a big success, and it gave the boys’ team a real boost with much-needed funds.

Booking a Race night

Corporate Karaoke in Scotland: Why It Works and What to Expect

1 11th December 2022 by a2

Karaoke and a room full of strangers sounds like a recipe for awkwardness. What actually happened at the Radisson Red in Glasgow was the opposite — and it’s a good example of why karaoke works so well as corporate entertainment when it’s run properly. It’s the same story we see again and again at corporate karaoke events across Scotland.

Corporate karaoke Scotland event in full swing at the Radisson Red, Glasgow
Corporate karaoke Scotland in action — the Radisson Red, Glasgow

The Event: An International Conference Finale in Glasgow

Jane from Hotdocs.ca brought together a group of delegates from across the world for a conference in Glasgow in November 2022. After days of sessions, site visits and networking, she wanted the final evening to be relaxed, fun and genuinely memorable — something that would bring people together regardless of where they’d come from.

She chose karaoke at the Radisson Red, and asked Premier Disco to host it. It’s become one of our favourite examples of corporate karaoke Scotland done right.

Why Karaoke Works for Corporate Groups

Corporate events often struggle with the same problem: how do you get a group of colleagues or delegates — many of whom don’t know each other well — to actually relax and enjoy themselves? Icebreaker activities can feel forced. A sit-down dinner ends too quietly. A DJ night leaves half the room on the sidelines.

Karaoke solves this in a way that’s hard to replicate. It gives people something to do together, something to laugh about, and a shared experience that doesn’t require everyone to be on the dance floor. One person gets up and sings — badly, brilliantly, or somewhere in between — and suddenly the whole room joins in. It breaks hierarchies, levels the playing field, and creates the kind of memories that people talk about long after the conference ends. It’s the same kind of shared, informal experience that CIPD’s research on employee engagement links to a more engaged team.

It also travels well. With delegates from multiple countries, karaoke has an almost universal appeal. The song catalogue spans decades and genres, so there’s something for everyone regardless of background or age. That’s exactly why corporate karaoke Scotland bookings work so well for international teams.

What You Get on the Night

Every corporate karaoke Scotland booking includes the same essentials: professional equipment, a huge song library spanning every genre and era, and a host who knows how to read a room. That last part matters more than the equipment. Getting the first few people up, keeping energy high, calling songs at the right pace, and knowing when to push and when to hold back — that’s what separates a great karaoke night from a flat one.

We work in venues across Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fife, Perth, Stirling and the rest of Central Scotland. Our corporate clients include conference dinners, team nights out, away days and end-of-year parties. Every event is different, and we adapt to the group. Some want a competitive singalong between teams; others prefer a relaxed evening where people dip in and out as they like.

Ready to Book Your Next Event?

If you’re looking for entertainment that actually brings a group together — rather than just filling a room — karaoke is worth serious consideration. It works for small teams of 20 and large conference groups of 150+, and it scales well to most venue setups. This is corporate karaoke Scotland done properly.

We also provide quiz nights, giant games (garden games), race nights and full DJ services for corporate functions. If you’d like to talk through what would work best for your event, get in touch — we’re happy to advise.

Corporate Karaoke FAQs

Does corporate karaoke really work for team building?

Yes — and it works better than most corporate team building formats. It’s participatory rather than passive, and it creates shared memories. It also gets colleagues laughing together in a way that a quiz or workshop rarely does. The key is having an experienced presenter who reads the room and encourages without pressuring anyone.

How many people can corporate karaoke cater for?

We provide corporate karaoke for groups from around 20 up to several hundred guests. For larger events we can run multiple microphones and manage longer queues to ensure the evening keeps moving.

Which areas of Scotland do you cover for corporate karaoke?

We cover corporate karaoke events across Scotland from our base near Edinburgh. Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, Dundee, Fife, Stirling, and the Scottish Borders are all within our regular coverage area.

Can karaoke be combined with other entertainment at a corporate event?

Absolutely — karaoke works brilliantly alongside a DJ set, a race night, or a quiz. A popular structure starts with a DJ set to open the evening, followed by karaoke as a mid-evening highlight. Then it’s back to the DJ for the rest of the night. We can build whatever format works best for your event.
