Choosing the right venue is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for your wedding — and if great music and dancing matter to you, the venue’s suitability for a DJ or live band should be high on your checklist. After years of performing at weddings across Edinburgh and the Lothians, here’s our honest guide.
What to Look for in a Venue (From a DJ’s Perspective)
Before you fall in love with a venue’s aesthetics, check these practical points:
- Sound limiter: Many Edinburgh venues have electronic sound limiters that cut power to the DJ equipment if volume exceeds a threshold. Ask the venue directly. Read our guide to sound limiters for what this means in practice.
- Dancefloor size: A 6×6m dancefloor handles 50–80 dancers comfortably. Anything smaller and guests start avoiding it.
- Loading access: Ground-floor access with a straight run from the van to the function room means faster setup and less risk to equipment.
- Noise curfew: Many Edinburgh venues have an 11pm or midnight music cut-off. Know this before you book.
Edinburgh Venues We’ve Worked at and Rate Highly
Archerfield House, North Berwick
One of our favourite venues in the Lothians. The function suite on the first floor has great acoustics, a proper dancefloor, and staff who genuinely work with entertainment suppliers rather than against them. The outdoor setting makes it ideal for silent disco extensions too.
Melville Castle, Lasswade
A genuinely stunning castle setting within 20 minutes of Edinburgh city centre. The ballroom has character and decent height — important for lighting rigs. Sound limiter is in place, but manageable with experience. We’ve had many memorable nights here.
The Signet Library, Edinburgh Old Town
Breathtaking setting, but challenging for entertainment — tight loading access via the rear and acoustics that need careful EQ work. Noise restrictions are strict. Worth it for the wow factor if you plan carefully.
Edinburgh City Venues
Hotel function suites across the city centre — from the Radisson Red to boutique hotel ballrooms — offer modern acoustics and flexible capacity. Many are well-suited to both wedding reception DJ setups and karaoke evenings.
Questions to Ask Your Venue Before Booking
- Do you have a sound limiter, and what is the threshold in dB?
- What time does music need to finish?
- Is there a dedicated dancefloor, and what are its dimensions?
- How do external entertainment suppliers access the room?
- Can we use our own DJ/band, or do we have to use preferred suppliers?
