Corporate Karaoke in Scotland: Why It Works and What to Expect

1 11th December 2022 by James Veal

Karaoke and a room full of strangers sounds like a recipe for awkwardness. What actually happened at the Radisson Red in Glasgow was the opposite — and it’s a good example of why karaoke works so well as corporate entertainment when it’s run properly. It’s the same story we see again and again at corporate karaoke events across Scotland.

The Event: An International Conference Finale in Glasgow

Jane from Hotdocs.ca brought together a group of delegates from across the world for a conference in Glasgow in November 2022. After days of sessions, site visits and networking, she wanted the final evening to be relaxed, fun and genuinely memorable — something that would bring people together regardless of where they’d come from.

She chose karaoke at the Radisson Red, and asked Premier Disco to host it. It’s become one of our favourite examples of corporate karaoke Scotland done right.

Why Karaoke Works for Corporate Groups

Corporate events often struggle with the same problem: how do you get a group of colleagues or delegates — many of whom don’t know each other well — to actually relax and enjoy themselves? Icebreaker activities can feel forced. A sit-down dinner ends too quietly. A DJ night leaves half the room on the sidelines.

Karaoke solves this in a way that’s hard to replicate. It gives people something to do together, something to laugh about, and a shared experience that doesn’t require everyone to be on the dance floor. One person gets up and sings — badly, brilliantly, or somewhere in between — and suddenly the whole room joins in. It breaks hierarchies, levels the playing field, and creates the kind of memories that people talk about long after the conference ends. It’s the same kind of shared, informal experience that CIPD’s research on employee engagement links to a more engaged team.

It also travels well. With delegates from multiple countries, karaoke has an almost universal appeal. The song catalogue spans decades and genres, so there’s something for everyone regardless of background or age. That’s exactly why corporate karaoke Scotland bookings work so well for international teams.

What You Get on the Night

Every corporate karaoke Scotland booking includes the same essentials: professional equipment, a huge song library spanning every genre and era, and a host who knows how to read a room. That last part matters more than the equipment. Getting the first few people up, keeping energy high, calling songs at the right pace, and knowing when to push and when to hold back — that’s what separates a great karaoke night from a flat one.

We work in venues across Edinburgh, Glasgow, Fife, Perth, Stirling and the rest of Central Scotland. Our corporate clients include conference dinners, team nights out, away days and end-of-year parties. Every event is different, and we adapt to the group. Some want a competitive singalong between teams; others prefer a relaxed evening where people dip in and out as they like.

Ready to Book Your Next Event?

If you’re looking for entertainment that actually brings a group together — rather than just filling a room — karaoke is worth serious consideration. It works for small teams of 20 and large conference groups of 150+, and it scales well to most venue setups. This is corporate karaoke Scotland done properly.

We also provide quiz nights, giant games (garden games), race nights and full DJ services for corporate functions. If you’d like to talk through what would work best for your event, get in touch — we’re happy to advise.

Corporate Karaoke FAQs

Does corporate karaoke really work for team building?

Yes — and it works better than most corporate team building formats. It’s participatory rather than passive, and it creates shared memories. It also gets colleagues laughing together in a way that a quiz or workshop rarely does. The key is having an experienced presenter who reads the room and encourages without pressuring anyone.

How many people can corporate karaoke cater for?

We provide corporate karaoke for groups from around 20 up to several hundred guests. For larger events we can run multiple microphones and manage longer queues to ensure the evening keeps moving.

Which areas of Scotland do you cover for corporate karaoke?

We cover corporate karaoke events across Scotland from our base near Edinburgh. Edinburgh, Glasgow, Perth, Dundee, Fife, Stirling, and the Scottish Borders are all within our regular coverage area.

Can karaoke be combined with other entertainment at a corporate event?

Absolutely — karaoke works brilliantly alongside a DJ set, a race night, or a quiz. A popular structure starts with a DJ set to open the evening, followed by karaoke as a mid-evening highlight. Then it’s back to the DJ for the rest of the night. We can build whatever format works best for your event.

100 Greatest Disco Hits Of All Time

1 3rd August 2021 by James Veal

Welcome to Premier Disco’s greatest disco hits playlist — the songs that keep every Scottish dance floor full, ranked from four decades of DJing weddings and parties across the country.

Want these played live at your party? I’ve been DJing disco and soul at events across Scotland since 1979. See our decades & daytime disco parties, our mobile disco in Edinburgh and Glasgow, or get a free quote.

The Very Best Disco And Soul

A mirror ball for our greatest disco hits playlist — Premier Disco

The Best Disco Song In Our Greatest Disco Hits Playlist

Ever since the UK Top 40 started way back in 1952, thousands of songs have vied for a spot on the ultimate greatest disco hits playlist. As musical styles change through the decades, this list changes but not as much as you would think.

Hits from the earlier decades that stand the test of time will always outrank newer songs, as you can see in the list below. There are some cracking tunes here, and we encourage you to have a listen via your choice of music streaming service and see what you think.

This list might be of use when building the soundtrack to your event. It leans heavily on 70’s disco hits and soul classics — that was the golden era of classic disco, after all.

James remembers hunting high and low for a copy of the No. 1 song on this list. He heard it on the radio and just had to get a copy, eventually finding the 12″ version in a small record shop near the top of Easter Road in Edinburgh. Those are the kind of memories these soul classics still bring back.

If there’s anything you’d like to add to this list, just let us know.

ENJOY!

Premier Disco Cancellation Policy

1 1st July 2021 by James Veal

We believe in being completely transparent about what happens if you need to cancel your booking. This page sets out our cancellation policy clearly and explains the legal framework that underpins it. If you have any questions, get in touch and we’ll be happy to discuss.

What Happens If You Need to Cancel?

Life happens — and sometimes events need to be cancelled or postponed. If you find yourself in this situation, the most important thing is to contact us as early as possible. The sooner we know, the more options we have to help you, and the better the outcome is likely to be for everyone.

Will You Lose Any Payments Already Made?

This depends on when you cancel relative to your event date, and whether we have already incurred costs or completed work on your behalf.

If you cancel with sufficient notice, before we have made any financial commitments or incurred costs specifically for your event, we will refund all payments in full.

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 and the principles governing unfair contract terms in UK consumer law, a service provider may only retain payments — or charge a cancellation fee — to cover genuine losses or work already completed. A blanket policy of retaining deposits regardless of circumstances is unlikely to be enforceable. We have always operated on this basis and we are proud to be transparent about it.

In plain terms: if we cancel your booking through no fault of our own prior commitments, we retain nothing. If you cancel and we have already incurred costs or committed time specifically to your event, we may charge a fair and proportionate amount to cover those actual costs. Any balance above that will be refunded.

Your Payments Are Ring-Fenced

Every payment made to Premier Disco is ring-fenced from the moment it is received. Advance payments are held securely and separately, so they are always available to be returned if a cancellation is made. You are never at risk of your money having been spent before a refund is due.

Our Refund Guarantee

We guarantee that any refund due under this policy will be paid promptly and in full. No arguments, no unnecessary delays, no small print designed to avoid paying you back what you’re owed.

Postponement

If you need to postpone rather than cancel, we will always try to transfer your booking to a new date at no additional charge, subject to availability. Get in touch as early as possible and we’ll do everything we can to make it work.

If We Need to Cancel

In the extremely unlikely event that Premier Disco needs to cancel your booking, you will receive a full refund of all payments made. We will also do everything in our power to help you find a suitable replacement at short notice.

Get in Touch

If you have any questions about this policy or your specific booking, please contact us directly. We would rather have an honest conversation than leave you uncertain about where you stand.

How to Choose a Wedding DJ — The Questions Every Couple Should Ask

1 24th June 2021 by James Veal

Choosing a wedding DJ Scotland couples can trust isn’t just about picking someone who plays music. The DJ you choose will set the tone for your entire evening — from the moment guests arrive to the last song of the night. Get it right and your reception feels effortless. Get it wrong and no amount of good food or beautiful flowers will save the dancefloor.

This is a non-exhaustive list of questions you should be asking yourself — and any DJ you’re considering — before you make a booking.

Choosing the right wedding DJ makes all the difference to your evening reception

Choosing a Wedding DJ Scotland Couples Trust: Experience and Suitability

Does your DJ have the right experience for a wedding?

There are many different kinds of DJs, some with strong preferences for specific music types. A fantastic club DJ or kids’ party DJ isn’t necessarily the right choice for a wedding. A great wedding DJ will have extensive experience in the wedding sector specifically. They will be comfortable playing across genres, confident on the microphone for formal announcements and toasts, able to adapt to the crowd as the evening develops, and discreet enough never to become a distracting feature at any point during your day.

Are you hiring an individual DJ, an agency or a company?

There are many ways to hire a DJ. Agencies are often recommended but this isn’t always warranted. An agency will have various DJs on their books and will promise a replacement if your DJ is unavailable — but any reputable individual DJ will have the same backup arrangements in place. The difference is that an agency charges around 25% commission for this guarantee, then passes the responsibility back to the DJ anyway. Hiring a DJ directly, with a contract that specifies backup provisions, gives you the same protection without the additional cost.

Music, Equipment and Practicalities

What will your DJ provide?

It’s easy to book a DJ without fully understanding what they’re bringing. Clarify exactly what sound and lighting equipment is included, whether it’s suitable for your venue size, and whether there are any hidden costs. A good DJ should be able to tell you precisely what they’re providing and what, if anything, you’d need to arrange separately.

What music does your DJ have — and do they own it?

Most DJs own a large music collection. You still need to confirm they have what you want and that they’re genuinely comfortable playing it. If a DJ has no real experience with a particular genre you’ve requested, they should say so early and recommend someone who does.

One important point: streaming music at events has become more common, but it carries real risk. Streaming gives access to almost any track — until the wifi drops. Make sure your DJ owns their music rather than relying on a streaming service. Streaming can be useful for sourcing the odd unavailable track, but your entire evening’s music should never depend on a venue’s internet connection.

Can you submit a playlist in advance?

Some DJs won’t accept playlists, insisting you trust their judgement entirely. Never accept this — it will leave you with unhappy guests and music that wasn’t right for your crowd. A good DJ will ask for your preferences well in advance, confirm they have everything you want, and take requests on the night from you and your guests.

Will they accept a do-not-play list?

Just as important as the music you want is the music you don’t. There are many reasons couples have specific tracks they’d rather not hear on their wedding night. Make sure your DJ takes this seriously and notes it formally.

Does the price include lighting?

Music and atmosphere go hand in hand, but don’t underestimate the visual impact of good lighting. Ask specifically whether lighting is included in the quoted price, and if so what kind — basic disco lighting and quality uplighting are very different things.

A professional setup with quality lighting — Premier Disco at Houstoun House Hotel, West Lothian

Insurance, Safety and Contracts

Does your DJ have the correct insurance?

Your venue will have a contract with you, and your DJ will have a contract with you. If something goes wrong and the venue suffers damage, they will claim against you — and if your DJ has no Public Liability Insurance (PLI), you’ll be left to pay. PLI is an absolute requirement when choosing a wedding DJ Scotland-wide. Do not hire a DJ without it, no matter how convincing their pitch or how attractive their price. The National Association of DJs has a helpful guide to the kind of questions worth asking before you book.

Is the equipment PAT tested?

Properly tested and certified equipment reduces the risk of electrical faults and goes hand in hand with PLI. A responsible DJ will have up-to-date PAT certificates and should be able to provide them to any venue that asks. Many venues now require this before a DJ can set up.

Does your DJ have a backup plan for equipment failure?

Even well-maintained equipment can fail. If an amplifier or key piece of kit breaks down mid-event, does your DJ have a backup system to keep the evening going? Good maintenance and PAT certification reduce the risk, but a professional DJ will have contingency plans in place regardless. Ask specifically what happens if something goes wrong.

Does your DJ provide a written contract?

Always insist on a written contract. A verbal agreement is technically binding but without anything in writing you have no evidence of what was agreed — on music, timing, setup, pricing or any other detail. A professional DJ will provide a contract as a matter of course.

When you’re choosing a wedding DJ Scotland-wide, Premier Disco ticks every box on this list — fully insured, PAT tested, contracts provided, music owned outright, and playlists welcomed. If you’d like to check availability for your date, get in touch here or find out more about our wedding DJ service.

Sound Limiters at Wedding Venues: What They Mean and How We Handle Them

1 3rd January 2020 by James Veal

You’ve found your dream venue. The room is stunning, the catering is perfect — and then the coordinator mentions a sound limiter. Sound limiters at wedding venues catch a lot of couples off guard, but if you’re not sure what that means for your evening, you’re not alone. Here’s everything you need to know, and exactly how we handle it so your dance floor doesn’t suffer.

What Is a Sound Limiter?

A sound limiter is a device venues install to monitor and control the volume of amplified music. Most use a traffic light display. Green means you’re fine, amber is a warning, and red means the volume is too high. When the audio hits a set threshold, the limiter alerts the performer. In some cases it automatically cuts the power to all plugged-in equipment until levels drop back down.

They’re common in older buildings and hotels in residential areas. Venues that have received noise complaints from neighbours in the past often install one too. If your venue has one, your entertainment terms will include it — and your DJ needs to know about it well in advance.

Why Do Venues Have Them?

It usually comes down to planning conditions or neighbour complaints. Many of Scotland’s most beautiful wedding venues — historic buildings, country houses, city-centre spaces — sit close to housing. As a result, they’re often subject to local authority noise restrictions, and a handful of complaints can put an entertainment licence at risk. Venues install limiters as a safeguard.

The venue sets the limiter level, often in consultation with the local council. It varies significantly. Some venues operate comfortably at 97dB or above, while others are restricted to as low as 87dB. That difference matters more than it sounds. A 3dB reduction halves the technical sound level, and anything beyond 6dB is a noticeable drop in energy.

Will It Affect the Atmosphere at My Wedding?

Not if your DJ knows what they’re doing. An experienced DJ working within a limited venue is not the same as a quiet DJ. It’s a question of technique, equipment, and preparation.

We arrive early at every venue with a sound limiter to test levels properly before a single guest walks in. Speaker placement is critical. Positioning speakers correctly means the sound reaches the dance floor efficiently, without pushing unnecessarily high volume toward the limiter’s microphone. We use processing equipment to maximise clarity and warmth at lower levels, so the music still sounds full and energetic even within tight restrictions.

Sound limiters at wedding venues — Premier Disco's QSC speaker setup positioned for clarity at Colstoun House, East Lothian

In larger rooms or venues with quieter areas, we can add supplementary speakers. This means guests further from the dance floor can still hear clearly, without turning up the main system.

Questions to Ask Your Venue

Understanding sound limiters at wedding venues starts with asking the right questions. If you’re in the process of booking a venue, it’s worth asking these before you sign:

  • Is there a sound limiter installed, and what level is it set at?
  • Does the limiter cut power automatically, or just display a warning?
  • Is there a designated entertainment area with tested acoustics?
  • What time does amplified music need to finish?
  • Are there any restrictions on sub-bass frequencies?

Sharing the answers with your DJ as early as possible means they can prepare the right equipment and configuration for your specific room.

Marquee Weddings and Sound Limiters

Marquees in the grounds of a venue or private estate are often more exposed to noise travelling across open ground. As a result, some venues set lower limits for outdoor or semi-outdoor structures than for internal event spaces. If you’re planning a marquee reception, ask specifically whether different restrictions apply. It’s also worth checking whether there’s an indoor option if the weather or noise conditions change.

Our Approach to Sound Limiters at Wedding Venues

We’ve worked in limiter venues across Scotland for years — from intimate spaces in Edinburgh’s New Town to country houses in Perthshire and the Borders. A sound limiter has never stopped us delivering a full, energetic evening that keeps people on the dance floor.

When you book with us, we ask about your venue’s restrictions as part of the planning process, and contact the venue directly if needed. We arrive with the right equipment for the room and set up in a way that gives us the best possible performance within whatever limits apply. You shouldn’t have to think about it on the night — that’s our job.

We handle sound limiters at wedding venues across Scotland every season, so nothing here needs to feel daunting. If you’re planning a wedding at a venue with a sound limiter and want to talk through how we’d approach it, get in touch. We’re happy to give you an honest assessment before you book. For a deeper technical breakdown, FixTheMusic’s sound limiters guide is a useful independent resource covering the UK regulations behind them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if the sound limiter cuts the power during my wedding?

If the power cuts, the music stops until the DJ brings levels down and restarts the system. A good DJ will prevent this by monitoring levels carefully throughout the evening. In over a decade of working in limiter venues, we’ve never had an unplanned cut during a live event — preparation and the right equipment make the difference.

Does a sound limiter mean we can’t have bass-heavy music?

Not necessarily, but sub-bass frequencies do travel further and can trigger limiters more easily than mid or high frequencies. Some venues restrict bass specifically. We use audio processing to manage this — reducing the frequencies that cause problems while keeping the music sounding full and punchy on the dance floor.

Should I tell my DJ about the sound limiter before the wedding?

Yes — as early as possible, and ideally with the exact dB limit if your venue can provide it. The more notice your DJ has, the better they can prepare the right equipment and plan speaker placement for your specific room.

Are sound limiters common at Scottish wedding venues?

More common than many couples expect. City-centre venues, historic buildings, hotels in residential areas and country houses near housing are all likely to have some form of volume restriction. It’s always worth asking — and it’s never a reason to rule a venue out if the DJ knows how to work within it.

Camille & Emmanuel 19/10/19

1 22nd October 2019 by James Veal

This wedding DJ French Consulate booking was our first time performing at the French Consulate in Edinburgh. The occasion was the wedding of Camille and Emmanuel and the party for all their guests.

We always like to perform at a venue we have never been to before so were keen to see what was ahead of us at the French Consulate. It is a pretty grand building with some great staff.

Hire an experienced Wedding DJ

Every wedding DJ French Consulate booking starts the same way: the first, and very important, thing to impress us was the lift. This place has a lift! Unlike next door, at the Signet Library, where it almost kills us every time. A nice, easy access in a decent time left us plenty of time to set up our smaller than normal rig into the limited space we had for the night.

The wedding breakfast and dinner were held in the Edinburgh Suite which looks like a conferencing room. By the time the room was all decorated, it looked great.

It was a long day from the set up at 5pm. Dinner at 730 and dancing from 1030 until 130.

Wedding DJ French Consulate: The Music

We have plenty of experience performing at weddings but it is not very often we have been asked to do a full French wedding. Although confident that this would be a successful and enjoyable night, we were a bit apprehensive due to the large number of French songs chosen for the reception.

To best DJ any event there is a need to know and understand the music selection before you. There is a need for the knowledge of how to put certain pieces of music together in the right way. To achieve this there is also a need to know the music pretty well.

Our knowledge of French music is pretty much as good as our French language, limited to a couple of words. So with the help of the bride and groom’s list, we did what we could on the night. We ROCKED it! Unexpectedly the result was exactly as desired by the happy couple.

Everyone attending was just brilliant. Even when trying ceilidh dancing there was great banter and giggles. It is so much harder explaining the dances to people with a limited understanding of English, or our brand of Scottish at least.

Great people, great fun and a very successful night all round.
