Rounders Hire Scotland

Britain’s answer to baseball — bat, ball, and four posts to run around, perfect for a big group at a summer event. This is a simplified “friendly garden version” rather than the full official regulations, since those involve umpires and strict pitch dimensions better suited to competitive play.

How to Play Rounders: A Beginner’s Guide

6-15 Players per team4 Posts8+ Recommended age30-45 min Average game

What’s included: all equipment provided — bats, balls, and the 4 posts with markers for a full pitch setup.

How to Play

  1. One team bats, the other fields.
  2. The bowler bowls underarm to the batter, who tries to hit the ball and run around as many of the 4 posts as possible before the fielding team gets the ball back to that post.
  3. Reaching the 4th post in one go scores a full rounder; reaching the 2nd or 3rd post scores a half rounder.
  4. A batter is out if the ball is caught before it bounces, or if a fielder touches the post the batter is running to with the ball before they arrive.
  5. Teams swap after everyone’s batted (an innings). Most rounders after both teams have batted wins.

A Few Strategy Tips for Beginners

  • Aim into the gaps. Hit into spaces between fielders rather than straight at them.
  • Know your throw before the ball’s hit. Fielders should always know which post they’d throw to.
  • Running matters more than power. Even a small tap can be worth a post if fielders are out of position.

Fun Variations

  • Single innings. Shorten the game for a quicker party version.
  • Smaller pitch. Reduce the distance between posts for younger children.
