First Post-COVID Wedding!

Premier Disco Archerfield Hose
Archerfield House

Kerry & John Craig

For my first visit back to the land of work I had a visit to Archerfield House for the wedding reception of Kerry & John Craig. This is an amazing venue with a function room on the first floor.

Arrival and Prep

Since this was my first gig back after a long break due to that C-word, I arrived at 1815 for a 2100 start. Better to make sure I have enough time to get things all working correctly before the main event. For the most part, there were very few issues considering there were multiple OS and software updates in the past 18 months and my propensity to forget things. I had previously tested as much as I could but no better time for a test than when everything comes together for an event. A slight issue with DMX control but I found a temporary workaround until I could get stuck into it.

First Dance

Kerry, John, and the guests arrived at about 2130 to begin the evening activities starting with cutting the wedding cake.

Onto the first dance which was the classic John Legend song All Of Me. The bride and groom start the dance together for the photographs before waving all guests to join them on the dancefloor.

The first dance was followed by the very keen audience getting right into the dancing. It has been a while for us all and they were ready to party!

In the end, we had a great night, brief but great. Normally I play much later than midnight at this venue but the rather unnecessary restrictions due to a few Sars Cov II infections meant we had to abide by the early finishing time.

Thank you again Kerry & John for an amazing return to wedding performing.

Best wishes to you both.

Camille & Emmanuel 19/10/19

1 22nd October 2019 by James Veal Leave a Comment

This was the first time for me at the French Consulate in Edinburgh. The occasion was the wedding of Camille and Emmanuel and the party for all their guests.

I always like to perform at a venue I have never been to before so was keen to what was ahead of me at the French Consulate. It is a pretty grand building with some great staff.

The first, and very important, thing to impress me was the lift. This place has a lift! Unlike next door, at the Signet Library, where it almost kills me every time. A nice, easy access in a decent time left me plenty of time to set up my smaller than normal rig into the limited space I had for the night.

The wedding breakfast and dinner were held in the Edinburgh Suite which looks like a conferencing room. By the time the room was all decorated, it looked great.

It was a long day from the set up at 5pm. Dinner at 730 and dancing from 1030 until 130.

Music

I have plenty of experience performing at weddings but it is not very often I have been asked to do a full French wedding. Although confident that this would be a successful and enjoyable night, I was a bit apprehensive due to the large number of French songs chosen for the reception.

To best DJ any event there is a need to know and understand the music selection before you. There is a need for the knowledge of how to put certain pieces of music together in the right way. To achieve this there is also a need to know the music pretty well.

My knowledge of French music is pretty much as good as my French language, limited to a couple of words. So with the help of the bride and groom’s list, I did what I could on the night. I ROCKED it! Unexpectedly the result was exactly as desired by the happy couple.

Everyone attending was just brilliant. Even when trying ceilidh dancing there was great banter and giggles. It is so much harder explaining the dances to people with a limited understanding of English, or my brand of Scottish at least.

Great people, great fun and a very successful night all round.

Thank you to Camille and Emmanuel for your hospitality and for having me perform at your wedding reception.

Congratulations to both of you and have a great life together.

Lisa & Tim 20/10/19 Melville Castle

Premier Disco at Melville Castle
Melville Castle

I was back at Melville Castle this weekend to be the wedding dj for the October wedding of Lisa & Tim. Surprisingly sunny and warm, the weather was as good as it gets in October near Edinburgh.
It was my pleasure to play at the wedding of a wonderful couple and their amazing guests.

I arrived in the early afternoon to set up the equipment out of sight before the guests arrived. Nice easy access and helpful staff are always a plus for me. The stage at the far left of the marquee is the ideal area for a DJ to set up. We can keep the noise to the dance floor and still allow the guests to chat comfortably at their tables.

First Dance

The choice of music for the first dance of the night, by the bride and groom, was John Legend – All Of Me.

Lisa and Tim took their place on the dancefloor circled by their friends and family giving them a rapturous welcome. It was easy to see that everyone was close.

Wedding Shoe Game

Before the party gets started we have a quick wedding shoe game. Many of the guests had travelled a long way to attend the wedding so a quick game was organised to help break the ice.

This time it was with a wee bit of a difference, the questions were set by the guests. Everything started off fine but then came the risqué questions. Lisa and Tim are a great couple with a great sense of humour so they played right along, shocking some of their families but all in good fun!

Party Time

I was armed with a playlist provided by Lisa & Tim via their planner page on my website. A good eclectic selection of music including some Italian songs. Although Lisa is a London resident, her family originated in Italy and many family members travelled to see Lisa married.
Other music included Spanish, Hip Hop, R&B, Dance and good old disco.

It is always good to have an energetic audience, especially on a Sunday night, that really wants to party. Party they did from the very start right up until the last song. There were a number of requests to keep the music going but the time had come to end the night.

An amazing night for a special couple and their guests.

Best wishes to the newly married Lisa & Tim Blunn, it was my pleasure.

Mr & Mrs Lorenz

Wedding at Archerfield House

Wedding DJ at Archerfield Hose

Monday 5th August at Archerfield for the wedding of Kirsten and Greg Lorenz. All the way from New Orleans, bringing 40 of their friends and family, they were all up for a party.

The night started with the first dance, Ray Lamontagne with You Are The Best Thing, and continued into the parents dance with Leanne Womacks I Hope You Dance.

Amazing Sax

Right after the first dances came the first of two sets for saxophonist Ben Noir. Pumping energy and enthusiasm into the audience, Ben knows exactly how to entertain his audience. Amazing performance and certainly I highly recommend Ben if you need a saxophonist at your event.

You can contact Ben at saxeveryweekend.com

Throughout the night I was presented with a very eclectic selection of music. It still surprises me how different musical tastes vary not just in different countries but also between neighbouring regions in Scotland. These guys kept me on my toes with their requests and thankfully I had almost all of them.

Mr & Mrs Lorenz

Thanks for a great evening and thanks for a fantastic audience. Best wishes for your future.
