Burns Night Daytime Disco — A Scottish January Celebration

Burns Night on 25th January is Scotland’s most personal national celebration. However, the traditional Burns Supper format — late evening, full sit-down meal, a lot of whisky — doesn’t work for everyone. An afternoon Burns event does.

Our Burns Night daytime disco combines a Scottish DJ set — Burns songs, Caledonia, Flower of Scotland, The Proclaimers, Simple Minds, Runrig, Bay City Rollers — with ceilidh dancing. It also includes optional Burns Night traditions like the Immortal Memory and the Toast to the Lassies. It runs from around 1pm to 6pm, which means everyone is home at a sensible hour on a January Saturday.

It works particularly well for bowling clubs, golf clubs, community halls, WRI groups, care homes, corporate January events and private parties. The ceilidh element gets everyone on their feet regardless of whether they know what they’re doing — which, frankly, is part of the joy of a ceilidh. The DJ set gives people a chance to dance in their own way. And the whole afternoon has a shape and a Scottish identity that an ordinary party doesn’t.

Sober Daytime Disco — A Brilliant Afternoon Out Without Alcohol

The sober social scene in Scotland has grown substantially. Dry January has become mainstream. Mindful drinking is increasingly widespread. And a growing number of people simply prefer not to drink — for health reasons, personal reasons, religious reasons, because they’re in recovery, because they’re pregnant, because they’re driving. As a result, for all of these people, the standard model of Scottish socialising — in a pub, in the evening, with alcohol as the social lubricant — doesn’t work.

A sober daytime disco does. The afternoon timing removes the expectation of drinking that comes with any evening event. The music creates the energy and the atmosphere — no alcohol required. And the format is genuinely inclusive: it works for people who don’t drink and people who do, and for groups where everyone is in recovery and groups where it’s a mix. It also suits faith community events and workplace wellness days where not everyone drinks or where the organiser wants something more inclusive than a drinks reception.

We’ve been running alcohol-free or alcohol-light events for decades — care homes, school events, faith community celebrations — and the energy is always at least as high as any other event. A good DJ doesn’t need alcohol to fill a dancefloor. The music does that.

Burns Night and sober discos are simply the most distinctive expressions of that appetite. Each has a clear identity, a specific audience, and a format that the mainstream evening-out model can’t serve.

Classic Decades Parties

The 70s Soul and Disco Afternoon

Earth, Wind and Fire. Chic. Donna Summer. The O’Jays. The Bee Gees. If your crowd came of age in the 70s — or simply loves the music — a dedicated 70s afternoon is pure joy. Encourage guests to dress the part: flares, platforms, anything glittery. The contrast between the outfits and the setting (a village hall, a bowling club) makes it even more fun.

The 80s Party

The most popular decade for private daytime discos in Scotland right now. New wave, synth-pop, classic pop — there’s something for everyone and the recognition rate is almost 100%. Wham!, Duran Duran, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Madonna, Michael Jackson, A-ha, Culture Club. A themed dress code goes down particularly well: ra-ra skirts, big shoulder pads, crimped hair.

The 90s Dance Afternoon

For the slightly younger crowd (or anyone who spent their teenage years at Cream, Gatecrasher or Glasgow’s Sub Club). Eurodance, Britpop, UK garage, early house — the 90s had a breadth of dancefloor music that rewards a longer set. Think Blur and Oasis alongside Snap and Haddaway, rounded off with some proper late-90s dance anthems.

Motown and Northern Soul

A format that works across generations — there’s almost nobody who doesn’t respond to Stevie Wonder or the Temptations. A Motown afternoon has a warmth and joy to it. It suits community events, bowling club socials and birthday parties particularly well. For the more knowledgeable crowd, add some Northern Soul too.

Abba Party Afternoon

The Mamma Mia effect is real and shows no sign of fading. A dedicated Abba afternoon — with an Abba-heavy playlist, themed decorations and an encouraged dress code — has become one of our most reliably popular private event formats. It works especially well for mixed groups where not everyone has the same musical background, because Abba transcends generations.

The All-Decades Journey

For truly mixed groups — a 60th birthday where the guest list spans 40 years of ages, for example — a chronological decades journey is the most inclusive option. We start in the 60s and work through the 70s and 80s. From there, the 90s land in the middle of the afternoon when energy is highest, before rounding off with a crowd-pleasing finale. Every guest gets their moment.

School Reunion Disco

The secret ingredient for a great school reunion is the music from the actual years you were at school. We research the charts from the relevant years and build a set that triggers genuine nostalgia. Songs you haven’t thought about in 30 years suddenly sound like the best thing you’ve ever heard. Add some SpeedQuizzing with decade-themed rounds, and you have a full afternoon programme.

Community Hall Fundraiser Disco

A daytime disco is an excellent fundraiser format. For example, charging entry, running a raffle and keeping the bar open gives you multiple income streams running through the afternoon. Guests wear wireless headphones and switch between channels, so you can run a decades channel alongside a contemporary channel simultaneously. The visual spectacle of a roomful of people dancing in near-silence — each hearing something slightly different — is remarkable. It’s something guests talk about long afterwards.
