Need your electrical equipment PAT tested? Premier Disco offers professional Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) services across Edinburgh, the Lothians and central Scotland. Whether you run a small business, manage a community venue, run a club or organisation, or need your event equipment certified before a show, we can carry out a thorough, certificated PAT test and have you compliant quickly and affordably.
What Is PAT Testing?
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) — also known as Electrical Equipment Testing (EET) — is the inspection and testing of electrical appliances to ensure they are safe to use. It involves a visual check and an electrical test of each item, resulting in a pass or fail verdict and a dated test label applied to the appliance. A formal certificate is issued on completion.
PAT testing is required by many insurers, landlords, employers and event venues. While there is no specific law requiring PAT testing by name, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 place a legal duty on employers and venue operators to ensure electrical equipment is maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is the recognised way to demonstrate compliance.
Who Needs PAT Testing?
PAT testing is relevant for a wide range of individuals and organisations. We regularly test equipment for:
- Small businesses and offices — computers, monitors, printers, kettles, microwaves and other workplace appliances
- Community venues and clubs — bowling clubs, golf clubs, village halls and function suites that need regular equipment testing
- Event and entertainment equipment — PA systems, lighting rigs, DJ equipment, projectors and cables
- Landlords and letting agents — electrical appliances in rented properties
- Schools, churches and charities — ensuring equipment used in public spaces is safe and certificated
- Market traders and mobile businesses — portable equipment used at markets, fairs and outdoor events
What Does PAT Testing Include?
Every PAT test we carry out includes the following:
- Full visual inspection of each appliance, plug and cable
- Electrical testing using calibrated PAT testing equipment
- Pass or fail label applied to each tested item
- Itemised test certificate with results for every appliance
- Advice on any failed or borderline items

Frequently Asked Questions
How often does equipment need to be PAT tested?
It depends on the type of equipment and how it is used. Event and entertainment equipment used frequently in public spaces is typically tested annually. Office equipment in a low-risk environment may only need testing every 2–4 years. We can advise on the right frequency for your specific situation when you get in touch.
Is PAT testing a legal requirement?
There is no specific law that says equipment must be PAT tested by name. However, the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Electricity at Work Regulations require electrical equipment to be maintained in a safe condition. PAT testing is the most widely accepted method of demonstrating compliance, and most insurers and venues require a valid certificate.
How long does PAT testing take?
It depends on the number of items. A small batch of 10–20 appliances can typically be completed in under an hour. Larger jobs are priced and scheduled accordingly. We aim to cause minimal disruption to your business or venue.
What happens if an appliance fails?
Any appliance that fails will be clearly labelled and noted on your certificate. We will advise whether the item can be repaired or should be taken out of service. Failed items are not included in the pass certificate.
Do you test at our premises?
Yes — we come to you. We can test equipment at your business premises, venue, home or storage location across Edinburgh and central Scotland. There is no need for you to bring equipment to us.
