James Veal — The Person Behind Premier Disco

Premier Disco isn’t a faceless entertainment company. It’s me — James Veal — and I’ve been doing this since I was 16. If you book Premier Disco, you’re booking me personally. Not a subcontractor, not whoever’s available that weekend. Me.

How It Started

I fell in love with DJing as a teenager. I’d watched DJs control a room with exactly the right music at exactly the right moment and I knew straight away that’s what I wanted to do. I tried to get an established local company to take me on and train me. They weren’t interested.

So I bought my own kit, hired halls, and started running under-18s nights. They were a massive success — well over 100 people turning up most Friday and Saturday evenings. Word spread, bookings followed, and I was soon playing weddings and private parties. I had to teach myself everything: how to read a crowd, how to transition between genres, how to keep a dancefloor full when the energy starts to drop. Every audience was different, and I learned to adapt.

Building the Business

Those early events were the foundation. Over the years I developed my music knowledge across genres I’d never touched before — soul, funk, ceilidh, 80s, 90s dance, current chart — whatever a crowd needed, I learned it. My experience led me to some of the best hotels in East Lothian and Edinburgh, which remains a genuine honour. Every booking at a prestigious venue confirmed I was on the right track.

Premier Disco has been established since 1979 and I’ve built it into one of the most trusted entertainment companies in Scotland. In recent years I’ve expanded the services significantly — adding race nights with our electronic tote system, SpeedQuizzing quiz nights, Banging Bingo, silent discos, ceilidh calling, gameshow nights and full charity fun night packages. Each service has been developed to the same standard as the DJ work: properly planned, professionally delivered, and built around what clients actually need.

How I Work

I think of myself as an entrepreneur rather than just a DJ. The entertainment side is what most people see, but there’s a huge amount that goes on behind it — planning, coordination with venues and other suppliers, equipment maintenance, client communication, and a constant commitment to improving every aspect of the service.

What hasn’t changed since those early under-18s nights is this: my job is to make sure everyone has a great time. Every client is different. Every event needs its own approach. I spend time before every booking understanding exactly what you want, then I make it happen.

Client care is the most important part of what I do. You should feel well looked after from the first enquiry to the last song of the night — and every past client review we have suggests that’s exactly what happens.
